I think there is a case to be made that non-western communities open themselves to be “prone” to tribalism because we already are so homogenous. In my opinion, when one diverts from the norm, they get shunned from the community at large. But when they can begin to amass followers, the homogeneity is carried into that space as well, thus creating a tribe.
For me, case in point, just look at how many cults come out of South Korea! Cults, in some sense, are just tribes of people with different beliefs.
